History of 99 Continental Congress

The 99 percent Declaration Working Group has been reorganized as a non-profit organization. During its meetings, the committee discusses the movement and the plans to have an election of 876 delegates in March 2012 and to provide a site for the National General Assembly in July. We’ve also begun developing educational initiatives to inform citizens about civic engagement and voter registration, as well as how to register to vote.

It started when the New York Police has arrested 700 protestors on the Brooklyn Bridge. A group of around 20 students from a small liberal arts college in upstate New York was among those detained. A criminal defense attorney who lives and works in the area near the institution was contacted by the college’s administration to provide pro bono legal advice to the students. He came to the campus on October 7th and gave a discussion and PowerPoint presentation about how to prevent being arrested and what to do if you find yourself in this situation. He also talked about the kids’ specific situations and the alternatives they had in court, which was a lot of fun. Following this talk, the lawyer took the notes he had taken and used them to conduct some online research before drafting the 99 percent Declaration. The proclamation was made public on the internet, and he solicited feedback, revisions, and recommendations from the public. Hundreds, then thousands, of emails began to pour in from across the world.
